People like to accuse me of being all in on OpenAI. Well, this post should put that to bed lol.
I do not think the Codex release is (by itself) particularly game-changing. I think it is interesting because of what it signifies vs. the rest of the developer ecosystem. And I think it’s likely a first shot across the bow toward an autonomous agentic coding agent from OpenAI—and that will eventually be very interesting.
For now, the way to read Codex is probably as an example of an Apple-like move on OpenAI’s part—launching something that has been done before while claiming it’s new. Read on for why, and for how this plays into the recent Windsurf acquisition…
