A February 2025 St. Louis Fed study found workers are 33% more productive in hours using generative AI. A Harvard/BCG field experiment showed 40% improvement in quality, 25.1% faster completion, 12.2% more tasks done. These aren’t cherry-picked wins—they’re reproducible findings from rigorous research. But the same BCG study revealed a troubling flip side: when consultants used AI on tasks outside its capability frontier, they were 19 percentage points less likely to produce correct solutions than those working without AI at all.
The tool that makes good judgment better makes poor judgment catastrophically worse.
This explains the enterprise stall: over 80% of organizations have explored ChatGPT and Copilot, but only 5% made it to production deployment. Gartner predicts 30% of generative AI projects will be abandoned after proof of concept by end of 2025. The technology works. The capability to use it reliably doesn’t exist in most workforces.
The missing layer is what I call the 201 skills—the applied judgment that turns AI tools into consistent productivity gains. Training programs have bifurcated into 101 basics (tool tours, prompting fundamentals) and 401 technical implementation (APIs, RAG, fine-tuning), while almost entirely skipping the middle. Knowledge workers get demos, then they’re left to figure out the hard part on their own. Most don’t.
